Steelers fans might want to look away, as Pittsburgh star is a no-show for offseason workouts. Six-time pro bowler, Cameron Heyward, was not seen at last week’s voluntary offseason workouts. Heyward is a 13 year veteran, so his absence at practice may not seem to be a surprise to many. However, the longtime Steelers captain has never missed an offseason program in his career. Heyward has also indicated that he does not plan to attend OTAs this year, which might raise some concerns for Steeler Nation. Heyward, 35, is in the 4th and final year of a $66.5 million contract he signed in 2020, and is seeking an extension as he nears the final few years of his career (Over the Cap). The Steelers may be reluctant to extend their captain, who has the second largest cap hit on the roster and is coming off his lowest sack count in over a decade. Heyward is also coming off a groin injury that sidelined him for 8 weeks this season after not missing a single game since 2020. The Steelers may look to the draft or free agency to replace their longtime defensive tackle, should they decide against a contract extension. It is worth noting that the Steelers intend to honor the final year of the contract, as reports have suggested they have not asked Heyward to take a pay cut (Dulac). As we progress into the offseason, it will be interesting to see what the Steelers and Heyward have in mind as the team looks to build off a 10-7 season with a playoff appearance.
